In brief: AREDS vitamins
The national eye institute did a study that showed that a particular vitamin formula called areds can help reduce progression of macular degenration in people with high risk characteristics.
You should see your ophthalmologist to determine if you have these characteristics. There are particular eye vitamins that your eye md may recommend for your general ocular health.

In brief: You can't, however..
Macular degeneration is thought to occur from aging, exposure to uv radiation, exposure to toxins (smoking) and "pre-programmed" by genetics (family and race).
Many of the factors are beyond anyone's control, however you can lessen your risk by am early eye exam, don't smoke, shield your exposure from uv and follow your doctor's advice for nutrition and vitamins based on your age and exam.
