In brief: Bioidenticals
The women's health initiative study was terminated early for increase in breast cancer, heart attack ; stroke looked at only Premarin (conjugated estrogens) ; prempro which contain conjugated equine Estrogens ; progestin (synthetic; not progesterone).
Studies show bioidentical hormones (hormones exactly like those you make) are safe for most people (men need HRT too). Progesterone ; estriol protect vs. Breast cancer.

Estriol, a bioidentical estrogen used in bhrt, stimulates beta receptors in breast tissue, having a protective effect against breast cancer (NOT stimulating). I agree with Dr Hogan, and I think hormone replacement therapy is a growing practice now that doctors are learning more about bioidenticals.

In brief: Use with care
Hrt is a mixed bag - the original info came from the women's health initiative &suggested that for estrogen & progestin, there is an incr. Risk of heart attack, stroke, blood clots & breast cancer.
A few years later, the estrogen only arm suggested no increased risk of breast cancer (studies have shown that it is related to progestin) or heart attack. You should disc the pros/cons with your md.
