In brief: Sometimes

Hallux rigidly refers to degenerative arthritis of the mp joint of the big toe, the joint at the base of the toe.
It more commonly occurs after an injury to the toe, such as from turf toe. This refers to an injury to the joint from kicking a ball or spraining it while playing sports. In this case, it may develop in a younger person, it may also develop from many other causes.

In brief: Not usually

Without injury it usually takes years of abnormal wear and tear for this arthritic process to develop.
Consequently this condition is usually seen in patients over the age of 50.

In brief: Not usually

Hallux rigidus is osteoarthritis(oa) of the 1st metatarsophalangeal joint of the foot.
As it progresses, bone spurs form and the joint becomes very stiff. Hence, you need oa to have hallux rigidus. You get early oa from heredity or trauma to the joint. Unless you have one of these, then it is very unlikely to get hallux rigidus.

In brief: Not usually.

Usually it develops later in life, but it can be caused by trauma early in life.
Hallux rigidus is a disorder of the joint located at the base of the big toe which can lead to pain and stiffness in the joint. Hallux rigidus is actually a form of degenerative arthritis. Have it evaluated by a professional and get the appropriate treatment.
