Do I need surgery on hairline fracture? What effec on wrist if goes untreated?

NO. A hairline fracture rarely requires surgery but likely requires a cast. If untreated it may do ok. However, if it shifts out of position because it was not properly protected then that may have serious consequences.

Can a hairline fracture in the hand get worse if left untreated?

Yes. Yes, "hairline fractures" can get worse. Whether your fracture is from trauma or a stress fracture you must remember that the fracture is a weak place in the bone. If ample force is applied to the area the fracture could become larger or displace. Also, using an injured hand puts you at risk of injury to other areas that may come from improper mechanics when you compensate due to pain/ weakness. Read more...
Yes but . It really depends a lot on location ie a scaphoid fracture that leads to avascular necrosis or nonunion is not good but a matacarpal fracture may just hurt until teated, then get better quickly. Read more...

How mighti know if I have a hairline fracture in my wrist?

Repeat Xray or MRI. Initial xray may not show, but should in about 2 wks or so. An MRI is a much better test for for small fracture. A bone scan can also show this. If you did not have trauma, fracture is not likely. Use of antiinflammatory med such as aleve/motrin for pain, and a wrist splint may help quite a bit. Rest, but should have some gentle range of motion to avoid stiffness. Consult doc. Good luck. Read more...

Identifying a hairline fracture in the wrist in the flied I am an nremt and was curious as too make a positive diagnoses?

CT,MR or bone scan. Ct is reat for bone detalail & u can reformat into 2-d, also good to show healing. An mr will show edema and bleeding in the area of even a hairline fracrure, d not great for bone detail or 4 showing healing. Bone scan is very sensative for bone activity in the area of a suspected fx but is not specific $ fracture, only activity : infection, tumor etc i would go ct-mr if important.$$$$$$ , . Read more...
