In brief: Conservative crown

Onlay is a conservative alternative to crown.
Tooth cusps are preserved by "cusping" but tooth is not cut down so much like crown. If done properly, onlay is the best option to restore a weakened tooth. Onlays can be done from gold but also tooth color materials. Consult the dentist what would be the best option for you.

In brief: The onlay term

Refers to a restoration design for a tooth that covers at least one damaged/fractured cusp or supporting/chewing area of a tooth.
The design of an onlay suggests that there are portions of the tooth being restored that do not need to be repaired. Therefore, the onlay design can save sound tooth structure. Hope this helps.

In brief: Partial crown

A restoration made of gold alloy, porcelain or reinforced plastic.
This restoration is conservative and if the tooth is not completely broken down, is a great way to rebuild a tooth.

In brief: A hat on a tooth

An onlay is a partial crown or 'cap' on a tooth.
It does not cover the whole tooth up to the gums surrounding the tooth, but may cover only a portion of the tooth. It needs to cover or replace a cusp or 'point of the tooth, otherwise it would be called something different, like an inlay. It could be made of gold, composite, porcelain, or rarely amalgam.

In brief: Dental onlays

If there isn’t enough of your tooth left to support a regular filling and too much to need a crown, a dental onlay is a great option.
An onlay will cover one or more cusps (or points) of the tooth. It is usually made with tooth colored materials, like porcelain, to save as much of the original tooth as possible. With proper care, your dental onlay will last upwards of 30 years.
