In brief: Drill,remove,fill
The tooth is drilled into and the nerve and pulp removed.
The inside of the tooth is cleaned and then sealed. The front tooth is approached from the back (the tounge side).

In brief: Great
A root canal is a procedure that cleans out the inside (nerve/blood vessels) of the tooth.
A small hole is created on the back side of the crown of the tooth and this access hole will be used to clean the canal (inside) of the tooth.

In brief: From the back
To perform the procedure, access to the diseased tissue is accomplished by making a small opening in the back of he tooth that cannot be seen.
But of course, local anesthetic is given to insure your complete comfort. Then the inside of the tooth is carefully cleansed and shaped with instruments , rinsed and sealed. Then the tooth is resealed.
