What are fibroids and their effects on pregnancy? Do fibroids grow at the rate a baby grows if the woman is pregnant?

In brief: Benign muscle tumors
Fibroids can grow in pregnancy and usually don't cause problems unless they block the birth canal (requiring c-section for delivery), prevent good placental attachment and fetal perfusion (growth restriction), and rarely grow big enough to cause compression effects.
They can be followed by ultrasound during your pregnancy & your OB will keep you and your baby safe. Good luck with your baby!

In brief: Common
80% of women have fibroids.
They are benign muscle growths in your uterus. Pregnancy estrogen makes them double in size during the first trimester. Not much growth after that. After birth they shrink back in size. Rarely affects baby's growth. Main prob. Is that they often die off during preg. This is painful and can cause severe cramps and early labor. Do call your md if you have fibroid pain!
