What crystals cause gout? Is there a particular food or drink I can avoid, to avoid eating or drinking whatever makes the crystals?

In brief: Sodium urate crystal
People with gout have an elevated uric acid and this can lead to the production of monosodium urate crystals that can precipitate in the tissues and in the joints and cause the gout attacks.
In the susceptible individual alcohol, red meat can worsen this. Fortunately there are medications that can control and bring down the uric acid level and help prevent further attacks.

In brief: Uric acid
Uric acid causes gout.
Tart cherry juice is effective against gout; meats raise uric acid; avoid organ meats; fatty meats and alcohol will aggravate gout. Avoid these. Also, drink at least 3 liters fluid per day - to enhance uric acid excretion - incline diet to mostly whole grain, fruit, and veggies, using egg white for protein, then uric acid levels will come down.

It is important to know that the in tissue deposition is monosodium urate crystals but we treat the uric acid level in the blood. Below 6 is the goal, but in certain people we want lower like 5 or 4

Hard liquors, beers, shellfish and seafood, high protein items, such as meats, legumes such as beans and peas, some cheeses all should be limited or avoided.
Many websites list comprehensive gout diets. Cherry juice reduces gout flares.
