When I try to have a bowel movement only mucus comes out I'm constipated and have IBS what should I do?

Sounds like an impac. Tion. Get some glycerine suppositories and or fleet mineral oil enemas and follow the directions. Stay on liquid diet until the constipation has cleared, then be sure to drink at least 80-100 oz of caffeine free/alcohol free fluid daily to avoid a recurrence. Read more...

Bowel Movement covered in a lot of white stringy mucus. Is this because of ibs or could it be something else. All stools were covered.

GI Consult. Changes in mucous can be quite normal but you should visit your physician for a full exam and referral to a GI specialist who can take a careful history and do an exam. Based on your history and exam your GI doctor may want to do additional tests such as a stool culture for ova and parasites if necessary or look with a camera to assess you for any inflammatory bowel disease or colitis. Good luck. Read more...

A jar of baby prunes or some raisin bran are good examples. If the bleeding continues, see your pediatrician. Read more...

I have IBS, I can't get regular bowel movements. I increased my fibres and water but didn't work. Not hard stool, I can't make my rectum contract?

Maybe not IBS. Occasional incontinence of stool with fecal leakage is common, but loss of bowel control particularly without warning may signal a significant infection, inflammatory problem, maldigestive concern, or neurologic disorder. Sometimes, particularly in youths, the condition is behavioral. Has your evaluation included a check for procto-colitis, HIrschsprung's disease, pelvic floor dysfunction? Read more...

Urge to have bowel movements but when I go I can't or only manage to get a few hard pebbles. Increased fiber, water, exercise, stool Softener. IBS?

Not necessarily. One with constipation needs to be sure there is no other disease causing it. If constipation is just due to slow movement of the food and poop through the gut, then the things to try are vegetables, water, prune juice, prunes, fiber+water, Miralax, (polyethylene glycol) senokot or other senna, milk of magnesia, other laxatives... A doctor can evaluate and prescribe medication like Linzess, if laxatives aren't working. Read more...
