In brief: Abnormal periods
There are lots of causes for abnormal periods.
The two most common are stress, which interfere with normal brain hormone levels and lead to irregular cycles and extra bleeding, and fibroids, small benign tumors of the uterus which tend to occur after age 30. Birth control pills can also cause this, since the estrogen doses are so low.
