In brief: Can be necessary

Most physicians have had medical professors in medical school tell them that x-rays (including mris) and blood tests are only needed to confirm what one is already thinking.
Confirmation, however, may be necessary when the answer is not so obvious.

In brief: Good question

X-rays, MRI, ÇT and medical imaging can be useful to diagnose disease, infection and cancer.
Some use radiation and they are not cheap. Whether they are necessary and can help you is determined by the person ordering the exam. If the clinician has a high level of suspicion for a disease or problem that can be seen by the test, then the exam may be useful. You should not image without a reason.

In brief: Yes

Before we had modern medical imaging, doctors would often be lead to the incorrect diagnosis.
Even now with imaging, the doctor may still not get the correct diagnosis but her chances are much better. Imaging can save you unnecessary surgery or help the surgeon plan better. That said, many xrays are not necessary and always question your doctor before getting any imaging.
