SSRI . Feeling intense anxiety after stopping Prozac (fluoxetine) is not a known side effect, but is a good sign that Prozac (fluoxetine) was doing something for it. You might want to ask your md to go back on it? Read more...

What is the difference between Prozac (fluoxetine) and celexa?

SSRI's. Hello. They both belong to a class of medications called selective serotonine drug reuptake inhibitors (ssri's). Prozac (fluoxetine) was the first of the class. Celexa has been introduced since then. They are quite similiar but can have differences in side effects from person to person. Read more...
Prozac (fluoxetine) was prototype. Prozac or fluoxetine was the first selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Later ssri's that were developed worked on other subtypes of the serotonin receptors in the brain and thus in theory had less side effects. Also they were metabolized differently by the liver. Therefore duration of action or interaction with other medications differed. An example would be different degree of sexual problems. Read more...
A couple of key ones. While both work for depression or anxiety in the same manner, i.e. By regulating the brain's serotonin neurotransmitter system, Prozac (fluoxetine) has the advantage of extremely low risk of withdrawal effects when discontinued abruptly, while Celexa has the advantage of minimal risk of interactions with other meds a patient might take. Was on celexa for 13 years. Titrated to Prozac (fluoxetine) but caused bad side effects. Can I go back to celexa and be normal again or will it not work the same?

Antidepressants. It might work the same if yo go back to it. Some people do not respond the same when they go back on a medication that they used to take. Read more...
Data not available. The only ssri for which we have such data is prozac (fluoxetine). If a person has been on Prozac (fluoxetine) and it failed to work and they stopped it, then there was a 90% chance of it working when it was readministered. That type of data are not available for celexa. Having said that however i suspect that it is likely the same case for the other ssri's based on my clinical experience. Best wishes. Read more...

I have to get off of venlafaxine, its my call when, is there more of a success rate with Prozac (fluoxetine) or with celexa?

Work w/ a provider. I should only be your "call" to decide to begin the process - a pro needs to determine the pace for your safety. serotonin-syndrome is no joke. Also, while some do find a switch among SSRIs to be helpful - each has a list of side effects and response seems to be unique for each person. While you search - also try som CBT therapy - it may be the best bridge or alternative. No side effects at all. Read more...

Does the medication celexa cause weight gain? I was on it for three years and now I'm prozac (fluoxetine). Could these two medications cause weight gain?

Possibly. Many antidepressants are associated with weight gain; whether the drugs actually cause it or whether one's improved mood is still being debated. Ssri's (celexa/prozac/ paxil/et al), tricyclics (elavil, et al), MAO inhibitors have all been implicated. Experts suggest first changing within a class, e.g. From Paxil (most likely) to zoloft (least likely) or change to effexor, (venlafaxine) serzone, or wellbutrin. Read more...
Yes. Although Celexa is labeled as weight neutral and Prozac (fluoxetine) is weight negative. I have actually seen weight gain as well sometimes with these meds. A lot depends on the patient their own personal reaction to medicines. Check with your doctor to see if another medicine would be better and less likely to cause weight gain for you. Read more...

My doctor took me off Prozac (fluoxetine) & is putting me on celexa. Is there any harsh side effects I should expect?

Celexa (citalopram) Both are antidepressants of the ssri (selective serotonin reputable inhibitors) with similar side effect profiles. Read more...
Easy change. Because Prozac (fluoxetine) has a 5 day half life, it should taper itself off while the Celexa is getting up to speed. It isn't likely you'll have any harsh side effects from this transition. The two drugs have similar actions, but some people respond better to one than the other. Read more...
