In brief: Probably
The most bothersome aspect of your complaint is the inability to extend.
If this is because of pain it not as scary as no power in the muscle that extends the leg. Please do see a dr.

In brief: Yes
It is unusual to not be able to extend the leg with a strain or muscle pull.
Unless mostly resolved promptly, i believe you should go to a sports specialist. Some muscle injuries require surgery, and some are much more than just muscle injuries.
