In brief: Sunlight
Natural sunlight is a better source because it is full spectrum if vitamin d is an issue in northern climate oral vitamin d is readily available over the counter. Dsicuss with doctor re your vitamin d level and appropriate dose for you.

In brief: Yes, but
Relatively few people need to seek out extra sun for vitamin d and you certainly run a risk of skin cancer from the tanning exposure.

The intensity of sun tanning bed is typically quite high and often one laying in there nearly naked, thus getting a huge exposure to the light.
If you really want to know how much vitamin you are getting, follow this link http://www.Ncbi.Nlm.Nih.Gov/pmc/articles/pmc1495109/ becareful of the trade-off, getting vitamin vs raising your risk of skin cancer...Be sensible! good luck.

In brief: Do Not TanBed
Do not go in a tanning bed.
The evidence has been found that even a few trips to the local tanning bed increases the risk a melanoma 4 fold. The american cancer society and american academy of dermatology both have put out statements about incidental sun exposure and dietary and adequate vitamin d.

Conclusion for all the data on tanning beds use increases the risks of all skin cancers. Tanning bed use is NOT recommended.
