In brief: Optic neuritis
Optic neuritis is inflammation of the optic nerve, the nerve that delivers the information of sight.
When the optic nerve is inflamed, it may be painful to move the eye and the vision is poor. The vision cannot be corrected with lenses. Most often this condition occurs without a cause. Sometimes this is a symptom of MS.

In brief: Nerve inflammation
The key point is work up and treatment.
Treatment is not oral steroids because of the optic neuritis studies. Work up should include MRI to look to multiple sclerosis or brain lesions. Work up also includes infectious, systemic, and vascular causes of disc edema or ischemia. I suggest a pcp, a neurologist, and a neuro-ophthalmologist to work together.

In brief: Lowered vision
Optic neuritis is a disturbance of the nervous output from the retina to the brain due to inflammation and sometimes vascular insult to the optic nerve.
It sometimes is painful by itself or on eye motion. When recurrent there is a high incidence of multiple sclerosis. Most who have this after a profound drop in vision will recover. Some don't. You need evaluation by a neuro-ophthalmologist.
