After a week on bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim). Is my spider bite getting worse or better?

I can't see ur bite. Sorry, i can't see your bite & you didn't describe it so i can't tell. Actually, you should be best judge of whether it's better or worse. If better, less redness & pain, right? If worse, more redness & pain! if you're still not sure, go see your doc or whoever prescribe your bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim). As always, take as directed & finish your course of medications. Don't save it for next bite.

Treatment failure. Symptoms of an illness that will respond to a particular antibiotic usually start to improve within a few days and certainly shouldn't get worse. Went to ED 2 nights ago with spider bite and they diagnosis as abcess with cellulitis. Gave me a tetanus but did not I&d it. Sent me home with bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) and?

Depends... The rule of thumb for tx of an abscess is I&D and antibx that's true, however when it comes to practice there a few factors to consider. If it was still hard it cannot be drained. If it is also not too big in my experience using warm compresses along with antibiotics can resolve it. I usually follow up in one or two days and check if then needs drainage. F/u with your provider if not better. Read more...
Infection. most of these infected spider bites will respond to antibiotics; however, if abscess formation does not resolve on bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim). I would suggest reevaluation for a surgical I&D with bacterial culture to rule out MRSA. Read more...

My nephew has a spider bite on his left lower leg. It is red, swollen and tender. I'm a nurse and have some antibiotics-Is Septra (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) or Keflex better?

NEITHER!!!!!! Spider bites are RARE. He probably has something else. NO ANTIBIOTIC IS OF ANY USE FOR REACTIONS TO SPIDER VENOM!!! Unless he saw and felt the attack, then took the spider for identification, assume it is something else. Brown recluse and black widow spiders in USA are found almost exclusively in the southwest quadrant. Where are you? Ordinary spiders are completely harmless. Read more...
