In brief: Laryngitis
Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx which contain the vocal cords.
It is almost exclusively caused by viral infections. In nearly all cases it will resolve completely with no lasting effects. An exception is, if you stress your voice before it is normal it can lead to chronic inflammation and nodules or scarring of the vocal cords resulting in a chronic hoarse voice.
