My doctor says I have gastroparesis, but I don't understand. What does it mean?

In brief: Stomach paralysis

Gastro means having to do with stomach.
Paresis: implies paralysis. So basically its a condition where your stomach doesn't empty properly (usually delayed emptying) it's a dysfunction of the systems that controls your stomach function.

In brief: Slow stomach

Gastroparesis means a stomach ('gastro") that's slow to empty ("paresis")--seen in diabetics, with ischemia, pancreatic cancer, after viral infection, post-surgery, with stomach pacemaker problems (yes, the stomach has a pacemaker!), & in systemic illness.
The stomach normally empties liquids in 1-2 hours, solids 4-6 hours after meals. A gastric emptying scan measures stomach transit of test meal.
