In brief: Mesothelioma is
A cancer of the membranes that cover the chest cavity, and the nooks and crannies of each lobe and the mediastinum where the heart, swallowing tube and nerves, blood vessels and lymphatics live.
Tv and billboard direct you to lawyers because there is a connection to asbestos, and producers are liable. It causes fluid to accumulate. There is a varied natural history, few do well; many do poorly.

In brief: Cancer of pleura.
Mesothelioma is cancer of the pleura.
The covering of the lung is called visceral pleura and the lining of the chest wall is called parietal pleura. This is a cancer that is generally incurable unless small and localized, although it is diffuse or has spread to adjacent tissues or organ, by the time it is diagnosed. Treatment is multi-modality. Commonly it is associated with asbestos exposure.
