2 doctors agree
In brief: Prevent acute flare
Diverticular disease is caused by constipation.
Problems arise when infection or other complications such as blockage or perforation set in. Tp prevent , maintain a high-fibre diet, and drink plenty of water. . Acute infectious attacks, usually sharp pain in lower left abdomen, require treatment with antibiotics. More than 2 attacks, you should consider surgery to remove that part of the colon.

In brief: Many things
If you just have diverticulosis, i recommend a high fiber diet, 80-100 ounces non alcoholic, non caffeine fluids daily and avoid nuts, seeds, and popcorn.
If you have diverticulitis, you will have pain, fever and an elevated white cell count in your blood and that needs to be treated with antibiotics and bowel rest, usually a low fiber diet for 6 weeks. See an expert.
