In brief: Prevention
Mumps can be a very serious disease causing swollen glands, swelling of the testicles, encephalitis.
It can lead to sterility. There are no good antiviral cures..Prevention is best thru immunizations.

In brief: Nothing much
Since mumps is a viral infection, no effective treatment is available.
Fortunately, mumps vaccine is very effective even if long-term protection requires two doses of vaccine, typically given at 1 and 4 years of age. Mumps used to be a leading cause of viral meningitis and orchitis(inflammation of testicle) until universal vaccination against mumps was instituted.

It also caused most cases of non-alcoholic, non-gallstone pancreatitis before the vaccine was introduced.
