Can a fibromyalgia patient on nortriptyline take cymbalta (duloxetine) for depression?

Fibromyalgia. Dear butterfly78765, nortriptyline is an older tricyclic antidepressants which has cardiac and anticholinergic side effects. It would be best to optimize one medication, either one would be fine, Cymbalta (duloxetine) would be preferred due to lesser side effects, major one being 10% patients can get high blood pressure. The answer is purely for educational purposes, please contact your md.

No. I wouldn't. they are different drugs with different mechanisms of action, which may lead to withdrawl. If you are going to stop celexa, I would taper over at least one month while on cymbalta (duloxetine). Read more...

Quantity misleads. You are taking many medicines, but the dosage that you have given is in each case inadequate for a therapeutic response. In general it doesn't work to add additional medicines, all at doses too low. You need to take initially one medicine at a therapeutic dosage, for at least a few weeks. Regimen needs an overhaul, avoiding "piling on." Read more...

I assume you are taking it at night so it can help you sleep. Be assured that it is also working during the day for your depression. If you are having trouble feeling sad during the day, make sure to see your doctor again. Read more...
