In brief: Healthy lifestyle

Keep weight in a healthy range.
Eat lots of fruit, vegetables and whole grains. If you're not vegetarian, eat fish, poultry and lean meat. Even if you do eat meat, substitute non-meat protein dishes at more meals. Watch salt intake. Get regular aerobic exercise. You may also want to practice relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga, or tai chi.

Don't just watch salt intake- reduce to 2000mg/day or less (that's hard to do). Google DASH (dietary approaches to stopping hypertension).

In brief: Exercise-lose weight

Life style changes will help avoid high blood pressure.
You need to do vigorous exercise 30min/day up 5-7 days a week, lose extra weight, cut alcohol intake, cut salt intake and do 'stress management'. High blood pressure is rampant in western world mainly due sedentary lifestyle (80% of americans are sedentary!) and rise of obesity.
