The tonsils are quite close to the lateral tongue bases so swelling from tonsillitis can involve the tongue.
There are also lingual or tongue tonsils where the tongue merges with the top of the larynx which can be involved either by themselves or with typical tonsillitis. One can have tonsillitis without fever especially viral.
