In brief: Mood instability and

Swings from depressive symptoms sleep problems and loss of drive, energy and motivation to bouts of elevated moods that may be a little more productive & are accompanied by agitation and insomnia.
If the elevated periods (hypo-mania) become mania the disorder is then from that point on said to be type i bipolar disorder. Generally the periods of hypo-mania in bipolar ii are not necessarily happy.

In brief: Hypo mania

The distinction between bipolar 1 and bipolar 2 is mania vs hypo mania.
Both usually have depressive episodes. Hypo mania may include some decreased need for sleep, increased productivity, and increased self esteem, but can also cause irritability. Mania is more extensive and usually leads to psychosis or legal issues and may require hospitalization.
