In brief: Just "below" mania
Decreased sleep, very outgoing, energetic and competitive, increased sexuality, impulsiveness, risk-taking, fleet of mind.
Often fully functioning. If associated with episodes of depression it is a "milder" form of manic-depression known as bipolar ii. Though it is often associated with heightened productivity, it should not be dismissed as having no cost-these are less visible than in full mania.

In brief: Attenuated mania
We used to say if you had to b hospitalized for pressured speech & thought hyperactivity flight of ideas hyper irritability euphoria grandiosity insomnia etc you were manioc and if you had similar symptoms but didn't require inpatient care you were hypo manic--doesn't hold up now because it's hard to get admitted to the hospital --we now call ith bipolar 1, & bipolar 11 (hypo manic).
