Why is it important to monitor markers for prostate disease?

Early detection. There is only one widely used marker for prostate cancer which is psa. Prostate cancer is a potentially devastating disease that is best managed when caught early, a benefit for screening. Prostate cancer in its early stages generally causes no symptoms and thus may only be detected with a blood test or rectal exam. Debate, however, exists for which men should undergo treatment.
PROSTATE. The disease you speak of is prostate cancer. The marker is prostate specific antigen. There are other more sensitive markers out there now. Anyone with a father/uncle who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 65 has a family history. African americans have a higher risk of more aggressive disease. It is the 3rd most common cancer in men.
