In brief: Mature infant

Infant born with mild prematurity or full term and without contracted intrauterine infection are much less likely to develop bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

In brief: Full term delivery

While several things are used to try to prevent bpd, also known as chronic lung disease of prematurity, we know it is closely related to how early a baby is born, those infants born before 30 wks being most affected.
Other preventative measures include, limiting the length of time on the breathing machine, vitamins, anti inflammatories, and giving steroids to mom before delivery.

In brief: Prenatal care...

Prenatal care reduces the risk of premature birth which is the major cause of bpd.
Administering surfactant immediately to newborn preemies also decreases the severity of bpd, and of course smoke-polluted environment would make it worse.
