In brief: X-ray

The best test is a good physical exam and x-rays.
Sometimes both hands may have to be x-rayed in a child because of growth centers. On rare occasions an MRI may be needed.

In brief: Pain, xray findings

Patients with broken bones have localized tenderness at the site of injury.
Sometimes there is sweilling, bruising and deformity. Frequently there is pain with attempted use or limited use. An x-ray will show a broken bone in the hand.
