In brief: Step by step
Good diagnosis starts with history and medical exams by your doctor or neurologist.
If general medical is fine, usually neurologic exam and tests are geared toward ruling and diagnosis treatable forms of dementia. Early stages may not be evident on medical tests, and neuropsychological testing can play an important role in early diagnosis, treatment and differential with depression.

Yes. We also have biomarker tests available (CSF panel + PET AB42 imaging) but medicare has declined to cover their costs (likely until we have disease modifying treatments available)

Tests for dementia is the history from the patient and family.
This is the first indicator that something may be wrong. Then neuropsych testing can help to isolate where the problem is.

In brief: Tests of thinking
A diagnosis of dementia depends on a history of decline in daily living activities coupled with tests of mental status.
Other tests such as labs, brain scans, spinal fluid testing, etc. Are used to decide on a specific diagnosis and to look for treatable causes of decline.
