In brief: See lens whitening
Cataract cause: Cataract occur from change in lens proteins which cause whitening/clouding/opacity of clear lens composition: can be due to an infection or inflammation from birth/congential (ie, rubella), old age/genetics, steroid use, trauma, poor diet; smoking & Diabetes increases risk.
Can be seen on microscope (slit lamp) exam easily. More info: eyedoc2020@blogspot.com

In brief: Vision, observation
Your basic symptoms for a cataract is lowered vision with no other cause for the lowering.
Cataracts are slow in onset and painless. A common early symptom is glare from oncoming headlights. When your ophthalmologist cannot improve eyeglasses to see well, then he will look for cataracts inside the eye with his instruments as a probable cause.
