What does it mean when a man has barretts esophagus?

Acid reflux. Chronic acid reflux can permanently damage the esophagus leading to barrets esophagus. In some patients this condition can progress to esophageal cancer. In most cases it should be surveyed by endoscopy.
Gastric reflux. Man or woman, barrett's esophagus results from damage to the lining of the esophagus due to backup of gastric acid and enzymes. There are changes in the mucosa, ulceration, bleeding, scarring and overtime may develop cancer. Symptoms are heart burn and swallowing difficulty. Treatment is with antacids and may be surgery depending on the cause and extent of damage.
