In brief: Skull base fracture
A basilar skull fracture is a fracture at the base of the skull.
It can be associated with "raccoon eyes, " blood behind the ear drum or behind the ear. There can be a leakage of cerebrospinal fluid and the possibility of infection travelling in to cause meningitis. There can also be associated damage to nerves or blood vessels as they travel through the bone of the skull base.
