I did a search for diagnosis of some of my symptoms and came up with broken ankle. What do doctors look for to diagnose it?

In brief: X-ray
An x-ray is the gold standard to diagnose an ankle fracture.
A thorough physical exam should always accompany an x-ray. Occasionally, a ct scan or an MRI is needed to diagnose or further define a hidden or complex fracture.

Bone scans and MRI's often pick up hidden fractures ,especially stress reactions, that plain xrays might miss.

In brief: 1
An xray should be taken to evaluate for an ankle fracture.
Typically 3 views should be taken. This allows the doctor to evaluate the severity and type of fracture involved and to determine whether surgery is needed.

In brief: Xray
Typically the best way to diagnose a fracture is an xray if an xray cannot provide a definitive diagnosis, sometimes an MRI or ct scan might be necessary.
