In brief: Depends
Most chickenpox will self heal over a week or so in kids.
There are antiviral medications that can suppress the intensity of the illness if taken early in the illness, but these are not recommended for most natural cases in kids. Adults should receive treatment because of the amplified intensity and complications involved.

Dermatology
In brief: Treat fever & itch
Most children with chickenpox have a fever and itch but aren't that sick.
Treat the fever (acetaminophen, etc.) and the rash (hydrocortisone cream) and wait it out. Adults with chickenpox are usually much sicker; i would not attempt to treat that at home.
