In brief: Yes and no

Aspirin won, t dissolve clots that you already have, but there is some evidence it may play some small role in preventing them from increasing, though that is really what Heparin or Coumadin (warfarin) do.
Asa has a role in preventing platelets from sticking together. If there is an irregularity in the lining of a vessel the body will think there is a cut and form a clot and occlude the vessel. Asa prevents it.

In brief: No

Aspirin has been proven to reduce the incidence of heart attack (by inhibiting platelets) but is not helpful for clots in the legs, lungs, or from atrial fibrillation.
