In brief: MRI

Plain x-ray gives good diagnostic information about bones but for more subtle issues like ligaments, MRI is a better imaging type.
Keeping an open mind about the diagnosis is important. This could be nerve-related e.g. reflex sympathetic dystrophy or referred pain from your lower back. if your GP has not found an answer then seeking a review from an orthopaedic surgeon may be warranted.

In brief: MRI

Ligamentous injury or reflex sympathetic dystrophy because of the history of trauma may be present.
An MRI will help show these pathologiea . It is likely your pain is unrelated but a good physical exam and history are key. An orthopedic surgeon or podiatrist would help.
