In brief: Depends on peel type

Lower potency peels can be performed by anyone.
Some of these peels active ingredients exist in natural producs such as glycolic acid (sugar cane) Lactic Acid (milk) salicylic acid (willow bark) and have been used for centuries. However, higher potency peels such as tca or phenol which can achieve dramatic results have a higher complication potential and should be performed under md supervision.

In brief: Legally, any type

Best done by plastic surgeons or dermatologists.
Chemical peel isn't "ordered"-generally it is performed by the doctor or his/her technician in the office.

In brief: Any can, Few should

Any md *can* perform a chemical peel.
Only experienced and properly trained doctors should perform peels. Medical grade peels can get great results, but can cause permanent problems if used improperly. Seek out consultation with a trained specialist to discuss your treatment options and to get great results. Look for a (facial) plastic surgeon, or dermatologist.

In brief: Varies

Chemical peels can be superficial to deep.
Peels that are medical grade (not the ones offered at spa's which are buffered) can be offered by any physician who has cosmetics in their practice, thus private physicians (primary care, gyne, plastics, ophthamologist), medspas and derm offices. The expertise in the treatment & recommendations will vary from office to office.

In brief: Training is key

Dermatologists, plastic surgeons and facial cosmetic surgeons are the doctors who most often perform medium and deep chemical peels.
Other groups of doctors may get into the cosmetic business by attending training seminars. Aestheticians and rns usually are trained in light chemical peels. You could ask to see before and after photos or talk to patients who have had the procedure before you.
