In brief: A bit of help...
From iodine tablets, because reactor melt downs and a bombs release radioactive iodine, and these cause future cancers in many.
However, there is no morning after or day before pill to pevent lethal radiation overdoses or atomic attacks. During the cold war, there was major searches to find medical means to prevent lethal total body exposure...We have none from the effort.

I agree with Dr. Turrisi - this, as much as for any medical issue, follows the aphorism:"an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" !

In brief: Radiation exposure
Potassium iodide is used to protect against thyroid cancer; ideally it is given before the exposure occurs, but may be used up to 24 hrs after exposure.
The type (alpha, beta, gamma, x-ray) & duration of exposure will play role in treatment. See the following site for more info: http://www.Mayoclinic.Com/health/radiation-sickness/ds00432.
