In brief: Support
Once you detox and are sober, you need to join a support group.
Alcoholics anonymous and celebrate recovery are two excellent organizations that help people deal with alcohol addiction. I would suggest making arrangements to join a group as you are planning your entry into detox. They might be able to visit you in the detox center and help with your transition to home as well.

In brief: Many
Many drugs are used to help with alcohol dependency.
Naltrexone, varenicline, clonidine, disulfiram, diazepam are useful medications to be used only under a doctor's direction. Dr ulrich is quite correct in recommending expert care in dealing with alcohol withdrawal. 12 step programs, counseling w/ an alcohol/drug expert, and consulting your doctor are the best ways to deal with alcohol problems.

In brief: Sedatives
For the most part, two classes of medications are used to manage alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
The first is called sedative/hypnotics such as valium, Librium or ativan (lorazepam). The second is anticonvulsants or anti-seizure medications. Sometimes both are needed in severe cases in order to safely detox someone from alcohol. Such treatment generally takes about four days. You shouldn't try it yourself.
