Dr. Harris Cohen
Family Medicine

In brief: Skin trauma
Skin trauma is often addressed by your primary care physician or an emergency room physician.
More complex cases may need plastic surgery consultation.

In brief: All trauma not equal
Minor skin trauma, small areas of abrasions, cuts etc are easily dealt with by your pcp unless they affect primary areas like the face.
For injuries like these or larger , injuries involving blood vessels and nerves or exposed tendons and bones as well as skin, your likely choice or referral will be a plastic surgeon.

In brief: General practice/ER
Just about any doc should be able to help, of course some are less comfortable than others, and it depends how straight forward the issue is.
It is usually best and easiest to see your family doc or urgent care doc first, and if you need a referral, they will send you to the right place.

In brief: Trauma
Family doctors, surgeons, er doctors, plastic surgeons are all qualified to examine wounds and decide the best course of treatment.
I would encourage a patient who had a recent soft tissue trauma to visit one of these physicians. That way, optimal care can be rendered.
