In brief: Multiple
For treatment, psychiatrists and addiction specialists are important, while the pcp can also be a great asset.
However, alcoholics have many medical problems including trauma, liver, GI and pancreas probs, neuro probs, hematologic dz. These need imaging, procedures and treatment from physicians from er to neurosurg to radiology...And frequently anesthesia. Medical costs of alcoholism very high.

Your family or personal doctor is capable of counseling one with alcohol addiction and i want to point out that the one who matters most is the patient-he has to want to quit drinking.
Over the past few years, the american academy of addiction medicine has been created and physicians may do a one year fellowship in addiction medicine. It is a rapidly evolving specialty, and has much to offer tho.

Dr. Pierrette Mimi Poinsett
A family or personal doctor can counsel re alcohol and drug addiction IF they are trained to do so- some primary doctors do not have this preparation. If you have concerns that your primary care doctor cannot address- seek out an addiction medicine physician or an accredited chemical dependency treatment program
