In brief: Infection

Most coughs lasting less than a couple weeks are related to viral infections or less likely bacterial infection.
Chronic coughs are usually related to post nasal drip from allergies, asthma, and occasionally heart burn disease (gerd). Other possibilities include medications called ace inhibitors and rarely more concerning processes that need more careful history.

In brief: Depends....

How long has the cough been there? A cough of less than 3 weeks duration is usually due to acute bronchitis, either viral or bacterial.
A cough lasting longer than that is due to bronchospasm from any cause, gerd, post-nasal drip or a combination of these. See your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
