In brief: Yes

As long as it is to treat a kid.

In brief: Some do, some don't

Many pediatricians are very comfortable evaluating for and managing mild, uncomplicated depression.
Some of us have had additional training in this area through ongoing education and have special interest in psychological issues and behavioral problems of childhood, including depression. Other pediatricians have not kept up on this specific area of their knowledge, and refer. Just ask your ped!
