In brief: Yes
Hysterectomies are very common procedures.
Many doctors, but not all, feel comfortable removing the uterus through the vagina. It is a great way to have the surgery that is less invasive then an abdominal procedure, results in less pain and risks with a quicker recovery. Talk to your doctor about all the options, pros and cons.

The vaginal hysterectomy is still the safest, most non invasive method of doing a hysterectomy.
Unfortunately, the procedure appears to be a dying art. If you need a hysterectomy, and your dr. Offers a vaginal procedure, i would recommend it over the newer laparoscopic procedures for the above reasons.

unfortunately, vag hyst (VH) is not as common as it should be. VH is the original "Natural Orifice" surgery. For hysterectomy, in terms of invasiveness - starting with least invasive: VH, laparoscopic hysterectomy, robotic hyst, then abdominal hyst. Best for you is least invasive approach that can be done based on size shape of uterus and your medical history.

Abdominal hysterectomy (TAH) is still the most common route for hysterectomy in the usa.
Vaginal hysterectomy and lavh have become more common but still account for less than 30% of all hysterectomies. Straight vaginal hysterectomy is still the quickest mode but many gynecologists have more experience (and comfort) with tah. Lavh is considered the safest route of hysterectomy.
