Not very common. In autopsy series the incidence has been estimated to be 1 in 30, 000 while in clinical studies the incidence is estimate to be 1 in 1000 to 2500 patients.
The vast majority are found after a patient has had a kidney biopsy. About 3% of all avms have no known cause.
