How common is it for somebody to get coarctation of the aorta?

1 in 1500 births. Coarctation of the aorta is a congenital heart defect and occurs in 6-8% of patients with congenital heart disease.
It is rare. Coarctation occurs in about 1 of every 2000 children. However, among children with congenital heart disease, it is one of the more common defects.
