In brief: Depends

It depends on the type of crisis the patient is having.
Sickle cell vaso-occlusive crisis or painful crisis can be very painful and depending on the severity of the crisis and the particular patient's pain tolerance, personal coping skills, and pain perception can be severe enough to require hospitalization for pain management. There are other types of crises, though as well.
