More commonly your primary will order a lipid panel which includes the hdl-c. Note that an hdl-c below 40 is a major risk factor for coronary artery disease and above 60 it is generally a negative risk factor. However patients with levels below 40 may not be at risk and patients with levels above 60 might be at high risk. A lipidologist may help.
