Do I have to see a specialist to get a blood smear ordered?

No. Your doctor can order this test and specify what he/she is looking for or suspicious of certain illness. The pathologist is usually the one who reviews the test and provide answers to your doc!
No. Maybe. A peripheral blood smear (pbs) is a very common test. It is low tech but potentially very valuable. I think any physician can order it, but most often used by hematologists.
Maybe. Any doctor can order peripheral blood smear. However hematologist will be able to evaluate it under microscope and interprete the result. Pathologist can also evaluate peripheral blood smear.
